Locating a the owner's name and address for a cell phone number is becoming more than just a popular fad.  It's becoming something of an obsession for ten's of thousands of would-be "net detectives" according to USA Today.  Using newly offered online access to search billions of public records, almost 90% of the current in service telephone numbers can be traced to produce a name and address for the registered owner!

And not just regular landline numbers, either.  Cellular phone numbers and even some old-style page numbers can be reversed to provide the actual name and address of the person or business that owns it.  The report goes on to detail just how phone numbers end up in such a user friendly phone search database.  Most are purchased by the phone search provider from companies that specialize in collecting public records. 

Technically, that cell phone provider contract you signed could be considered a public record, therefore more often than not, your name and address will eventually become publically searchable online through such a database!  And even if the name and address info is not provided directly by the cell phone company, over time most will find their way into the public records databases by overuse of the customer.  Many people will willing give out their cell phone number when filling out applications for car loans and other credit, not realizing that the cell phone number they gave will quickly become associated with their name and address!
